What is Workshop Rotation?
The Workshop Rotation Model (or WoRM) is an exciting approach to Christian Education for Christ Church, where children and youth attend several “workshops” over the course of a month. Each workshop provides an opportunity for children to experience a lesson in a different way. One week kids may be donning chef’s hats and cooking up tasty treats, while the next they may become little professors conducting a science experiment. Kids in an art workshop can create a masterpiece, or reenact a favorite Bible story in a drama workshop. Listed below are descriptions for the different workshops and teaching roles we will be offering to our children in K-8th grades.
Four week units focused on a Bible Story, Character, or Faith Practice rotate through a series of the workshops listed below. Not every workshop will be included for each unit, but will be selected based on the theme for the current unit. Children will be divided into groups and a chart of groups and workshops will be located at the top landing of the Education Building hallway. Please frequently check this chart to know where your child will be for pickup after Church School.
Workshops we offer...
GATHERING/MUSIC TIME (Gathering Place)
We will gather in the Gathering Place located on the upper level of the Education Building beside the Nursery at the start of each week for a time of music and a short introduction to the Bible Story.
ART WORKSHOP (Creation Station) This station moves beyond crafts to art appreciation and the use of art as a learning tool. The Art Room is located in the lower level of the Education Building. It is over flowing with art supplies, a sink and counter, tables, stools, and plenty of room to display the art which our Church School will produce.
COMPUTER WORKSHOP (God’s Word.com) In our Church School’s computer lab, children can discover facts, be creative and play computer games and activities as a way to explore scriptures and biblical characters in more detail. The lab is located across from the Art Room on the lower level of the Education Building and is equipped with 8 computer stations and 2 printers.
COOKING WORKSHOP (Soul Food Café) In the Soul Food Café, children will be preparing food which directly relates to the Bible Story. For example, if the unit is about Mary and Martha, friends of Jesus from the New Testament, they could make Lentil Soup, Yogurt Cheese, and flat bread; foods which were eaten by people in New Testament times. Other times, they may prepare food as part of a mission project. The Café is located in the church kitchen on the lower level of the Education Building.
GAME WORKSHOP (Gathering Place) During this workshop children will play a variety of learning games, ranging from lively large motor skill games to quiet interactive games all surrounding the Bible Story for that particular unit. These workshops will take place in the Gathering Place in the upper level of the Education Building beside the Nursery, or depending upon weather, outside in the pavilion area.
SCIENCE WORKSHOP (Discovery Lab) Depending on the unit, the Science Station may include research, experiments, geography, or physical sciences. Through exploration of God’s world, the mystery and awesomeness of God can be revealed. The Discovery Lab is located in the room beside the kitchen and restroom in the lower level of the Education Building.
STORYTELLING WORKSHOP (Tent/Temple) During Storytelling, children will have opportunities not only to hear the Bible story told in a variety of ways, but to retell it themselves. Activities in this station will include ways to make the story come to life. The Storyteller’s tent is located beside the Nursery on the second floor and is part of the Gathering Place area.
VIDEO WORKSHOP (Holy Spirit Productions) Video is a powerful medium which quickly commands the attention of children. While viewing videos is a passive activity, this station has been carefully designed so children have opportunities to interact with the story. This workshop area will also serve as our puppet and drama theatre and is located in the upper level of the Education Building, at the top of the stairs of the Portico entrance.
Older Youth and Adult Church School Classes...
SENIOR HIGH (Grades 9-12) “The Calm in the Storm” Our Senior High teachers prepare units of study that are contemporary and relevant to the busy and sometimes complicated lives of teenagers. Classes are held in the lower level Youth Room.
LifeSearch for Adults This class offers an hour of open sharing, scripture and applicable current events to adults of any age who want a “holistic approach to faith formation and faithful living.” This intergenerational group (ages 20+ to 90+) uses Seasons of The Spirit and other sources based on the lectionary of the church year to connect with worship, learning and compassionate service. In the past, this group has participated in Lancaster Theological Seminary’s fall and spring Multi-Church Series.
Contemporary Christian Conversation is an adult class geared for Young Adults and those young at heart which meets in the Social Room in the lower level of the Education Building. The group uses The Wired-Word an on-line resource which focuses on current events mixed with pop culture. Come explore and grow with us!
SMALL GROUP BIBLE AND BOOK STUDY Several book discussions and Bible Studies are offered throughout the course of each year. Be prepared to dive into topics such as the book of Ephesians, Wild Women of the Bible, or Advent/Lenten series. Watch your NETS and bulletins for more information, and Signup on the Church Happenings Board.
Christ Church is a "Safe Church" and has in place a Safe Church Policy. Copies of this policy are available at the Church Office.
