GOT SPARE CHANGE?
The Quarter Tube is a little over half full!
Let’s fill it by the end of March!
Our target goal is $250.00 for one child, but wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to give more if not enough for two children! Look for the quarter tube in the Meeting Room under a display that tells you more about this wonderful program. Collection will continue through May 2010! If you wish to learn more about this program, please visit them on the web at: www.lctr.net .
Wednesday, March 17, a group will be traveling to New Windsor, Maryland to pack Disaster Relief Kits for distribution to Haiti and other areas in need around the world that have been struck by disaster. This group will leave at 6:30 AM from the church and return around 5:00 PM. Lunch will be provided. We will be working in the warehouse/distribution center, so wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Please sign up by Sunday, March 14. Contact Ken Collins (367-6175) for questions.
Five churches of Elizabethtown are sharing in Wednesday evening Lenten services. This year’s theme will be Christ’s parables.
The services are designed to be about an hour in length. The offering will be given to the emergency care of those in need of shelter, medicine, and other critical necessities. The schedule is as follows:
February 24 - St. Peter Catholic Church
March 3 - Sell Chapel
March 10 - Christ Church UCC
March 17 - St. Paul’s United Methodist
March 24 - First Church of God
March is one of two months in each year when your generosity helps replenish the local Food Bank shelves. With the economy floundering and loss of jobs on the rise, the need is greater than ever. Your donations can be placed on the table at the front of the sanctuary throughout the month of March. Bulk items are useful to those many singles or couples who also have needs. Following is a partial list of suggestions. Remember that nothing perishable can be used. Monetary gifts can be given to Jean Fasching, designated for the “Community Special Needs Fund”.
Beef stew
Jellies
Canned white potatoes
Peanut butter
Canned fruits
Bisquick
Canned meats
Fruit juices
Spaghetti sauce
Canned hash
Cereals
Pancake syrup
Saltines
Kidney beans

Every Sunday, the members of the Contemporary Christian Conversation Sunday School Class dive into the issues of the day and discuss how they intersect with our faith and how that impacts our lives.
For the last two years, the class has been using a curriculum called “The Wired Word,” which takes a ripped-from-the-headlines approach to Sunday School. Each Thursday, the class’ teacher receives an e-mail from “The Wired Word” with that Sunday’s lesson based on something that has been in the news that week. Each lesson is infused with questions that we as 21st Century Christians are asking ourselves, and it seeks to explore and address those questions and answers via appropriate Scripture.
So far this year, lessons have included in-depth discussions about Haiti and the response to the earthquake, a minor league baseball prospect who gave up a promising Major League baseball career to become a priest and a family who downsized from a large home and gave $800,000 to charity.
The lessons challenge us each week and strengthen our faith as we seek God in a modern world.
We meet each week in the basement Social Room. Please feel free to join us. If you would like to read some of the lessons that the class has used, please e-mail Jeff McCloud at teamccloud@gmail.com.
Saturday, March 6th, and Sunday, March 7th, Christ Church will be serving meals at the Crispus Attucks Center in Lancaster. Help is needed both days to transport and serve the dinner. Please be at the church by 3:15 PM to travel to Lancaster. If you can help serve or provide a dessert, please add your name to the sign-up sheet on the “Church Happenings” board in the hall. Since these meals are served on the weekend, it might fit your schedule to help serve one or both of these dates, rather than the Tuesday meals at First Reformed UCC.

Hygiene Kits can mean the difference between sickness and health for the struggling victims of natural disasters, violence or poverty. The Outreach Committee and the Board of Christian Education have partnered to establish a collection for items needed for the Hygiene Kits as stipulated by Church World Service (listed below). The Church School children will deposit their donations in containers at the WORM Resource Center on the second floor, and all members are welcome to deposit their items/kits in the box located at the mailboxes on the main floor. The following is a list of items needed for each kit. You may purchase individual items or provide an entire, complete kit. Please note that it is essential that all kits are identical, so please be sure to provide exactly what is listed, in the quantities and sizes stated. In May, the Church School classes will assemble the kits which will be sent to Church World Service for distribution.
If making a kit, place all items in a one-gallon plastic bag with zipper closure.
The Penn Central Conference has asked each church in the conference (204 churches) to place their gift of a Prayer Bowl in some prominent place in the church and offer its use for the worship of God, for the sharing of concerns and joys of the members, the hopes of the congregation and the hopes of the world. Prayer requests can be placed in this bowl on Sunday mornings or any time during the week. A Prayer Team will read them, lift up the concerns and commit themselves to praying for the needs, the hopes and the joys each week. In addition, the members of the Confirmation 2 Class have also made a covenant to begin each remaining session lifting up the prayer concerns to God as part of their devotions. This will not take the place of the prayer chain but is in addition to the Prayer Chain. Our very faithful Prayer Chain Ministry will continue as well. Each month, the Prayer Team will also receive an e-mail message about some wider church missions or human needs to lift up along with the local prayer requests. All of the churches in the conference are asked to keep the Prayer Bowl in our sanctuaries until June.
May this bowl link us with others who wish to deepen our calling to spiritual awareness.
Looking for the perfect gift? Stressed? Have the winter blues? Take care of all three by spending 45 minutes completely relaxing in God’s love. Sign up for the Healing Touch Clinic on Saturday, March 27, for a 9, 10, or 11:00 AM session. Sign up for a session by calling Jackie Page at 361-7972. For those of you who have trouble lying flat on your back, special tables have inclined back rests. Sessions are private and confidentiality is maintained..
“We are not asked to do great things, only small things with great love.”
How about trying some needlework during the long winter? Our knowledgeable women would love to help you with knitting, crocheting, cross stitch, hardanger, tatting, or any other “needle” work you may find interesting or challenging. Join us at 10:30 AM on the first Tuesday of every month. If you prefer to knit or crochet at home, prayer shawls are always welcome. Call Eleanor Lokey at 367-5807 for any questions.
On Sunday, March 21, 2010 at both the 9:00 & 10:30 AM services, the Chancel Choir will be performing an Easter Cantata. “The Triumph Song Of Life” was edited and arranged by Patrick M. Liebergen, with narration provided by Jean Anna Shafferman. The musical texts and the dramatic narrative effectively recall the triumphal entry into Jerusalem, the betrayal and the Last Supper, the crucifixion, and the resurrection of Jesus. This passion Cantata includes music from Beethoven, Gounod, Hammerschmidt, Handel, Mendelssohn, and Telemann. Please plan to worship with the choir at one of these services. There will be opportunities for you to sing along with parts of the cantata, so remember to bring your best singing voice.
Order forms for lilies will be available for three Sundays at each of the sanctuary entrances, beginning March 7 and continuing through March 21, 2010. The cost is $6.50. Place money and completed forms in the envelopes provided, then place the envelopes in the baskets at the entrances. Checks should be made out to Christ Church UCC and marked “lilies”. NOTE: If ordering more than one lily, use a separate form for each, but all may be paid for with one check and placed in one envelope.
Calling all cooks. . . .would you enjoy preparing a meal for fellow church members who are new parents, ill, or recuperating from a hospital stay? The Outreach Committee is compiling a list of volunteer chefs who are willing to prepare and deliver a meal to members who would find comfort from this service. To volunteer or for more information and guidelines, contact Cheryl Dively at 367-4254 or email: divelyjl@embarqmail.com
Many of our church family are regularly purchasing grocery cards for one or more of the four local food stores. (Darrenkamp’s, Giant, Groff’s Meats, and Weis). We often hear positive comments about how nice it is to use the cards rather than deal with cash or checks, and that the program is such an easy way for the church to raise some money. Thank you to everyone who faithfully participates in the Grocery Card Program and if you haven’t tried it yet, we hope you will do so soon. They may be purchased each Sunday between services at the back of the sanctuary, or any day during the week in the church office. During the month of January 2010, $433.75 was raised for the church.
$4,000 has been pledged for 2010 in our ongoing support of the PCC Capital Campaign. Funds are partially obtained through the Lenten & Advent coin
folders. Thank you for your support!
Please see Pastor Carol or Pastor Fred if interested in attending
Please contact the church office if interested.
We are still exploring different destinations such as Riverside UCC in NY City (Harlem) the Haitian Relief efforts, or work in Volusia County in Florida where there is still much roofing and dry walling to be done due to past hurricanes and tornadoes. That work would be done in conjunction with the UCC for people in lower economic levels who have exhausted all other means. The days for the Mission Trip will be sometime between July 6 through July 16. Leaving and returning dates will be determined.
Stay tuned for more details!

On March 14th, your gifts to One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) will offer hope and well-being to people in this country and around the world. The OGHS offering is the refugee, relief and development fund of the United Church of Christ, administered by Wider Church Ministries, Global Sharing of Resources.
By giving to OGHS, you join with communities in more than eighty countries struggling to overcome poverty, illiteracy, illness, and the dangers of wars and disasters. Your gifts provide sources of clean water and food, education and health care, small business micro-credit, emergency relief and resettlement for refugees and displaced persons. Your gifts also support domestic and international ministries for disaster preparedness and response.
At the time of writing this article, OGHS funds are already flowing to mission partners in Haiti to support their initial earthquake emergency response. Reports of on-line and congregational offerings specially designated “OGHS-Haitian Relief” from across the UCC appears to be very strong, indicating a generous outpouring of support. As damage assessments are made and plans for relief, recovery and rehabilitation are developed, additional funds will be shared.
The UCC responds immediately at times of natural disasters, but its commitment to recovery and rebuilding is long-term, long after the media spotlight has turned elsewhere.
When making your gift to OGHS, you actively participate in tending to God’s flock throughout the world. Live your love for the Good Shepherd. Feed Jesus’ sheep generously.
If you haven’t attended this event yet, then you’re missing a lot of fun. If you play cards, games, or just like sitting around talking, then this group is for you!
On the 2nd Thursday of each month, you’re invited to bring your games, your cards, a spouse or a friend to mingle, mix, and socialize. There won’t be a lot of structure to the afternoon and the only instructions will be to relax, to enjoy each other’s company, and to have fun. Come one, come all!
If you have any questions, please contact Eleanor Lokey or Pastor Carol.
Dear Christ Church ~
My sincere thanks to Pastor Carol, the Prayer Chain, Chancel Choir, Prayer Shawl Committee, and other members of the congregation for their prayers, visits, cards, phone calls, well wishes, and words of encouragement during my hospitalization and recuperation. I truly appreciate the beautiful Prayer Shawl that was given to me. I wore the shawl the entire time I was in the hospital as it provided great comfort to me. It is still a source of warmth and comfort to me as I progress in my recuperation.

Dear Christ Church members ~
We would like to sincerely thank everyone for their cards, hugs, and kind words following the death of Chris’ step-father. While the loss of a loved one is always difficult to deal with having the support of our church family has been a source of comfort. We are truly blessed to have such a caring congregation and staff at Christ Church.
